Parr Point Reserve, a popular Middle Harbour park, is up for a massive clean-up after traces of asbestos was discovered right under the Roseville Bridge.
Transport for NSW conducted an inspection of the site and found at least 80 cubic metres of asbestos dumped in the area, alongside construction and demolition wastes.
The department has immediately released funding of $463,100 for the parkland’s remediation whilst the contaminated site has been barred with a fence to prevent access.
“Analysis confirmed the samples of fibre cement products contained asbestos. Although some of the fragments were considered non-friable, a lot of the fragments were deemed to be in a poor, weathered, friable state,” the clean-up procedure stated.
Removing asbestos will be a priority as its impact and health risks to the public have to be curbed. The clean-up will involve the careful disposal of the asbestos in a landfill facility away from the community. The materials disposed will then be excavated with other soil materials as part of the mitigation measures.
Northern Beaches Council has jurisdiction over Parr Point Reserve and will approve the asbestos mitigation plan of Transport NSW.
